THE HISTORY OF 7777 W BONNIWELL RD

Once the home of Johann & Elisabeth Zolltheis in Howards Grove WI, built in 1870 and lived in until 1976. In 1988, it was scheduled to be burned and bulldozed to make room for a new building. Charles Kiernan, an antique collector, purchased the home in 1988 instead and took out the cupboards, trim and other wood to use repairing other antiques. Charles then sold the home to Jack Opitz, owner of Vanishing Heritage Restoration. Opitz took the house down and planned to restore the timbers and reassemble the home on a location of a buyer’s choice.

The Zolltheis house originally was supposed to have been transported by flatbed truck to Rowley’s Bay in Door County and reassembled there, but plans changed. In 1993, it was instead reassembled at 7777 W Bonniwell Rd. Approx 240 pieces of white pine, ash and red oak 8” x 8” hand-hewn timbers held together by 163 oak pegs were restored and put back together again to make a beautiful frame. The timbers and rafters were left exposed, but efficient windows and insulation were added to the building.

The original Zolltheis house was a story and one-half with 2178 sf of living space. The original reassembled home on Bonniwell Rd was originally 2600 sf with 3 levels, including an exposed lower level.
